Everybody knows that deer are color blind, right? Well, not necessarily. If you ask deer hunters around the country if deer are color blind you get a variety of answers, including yes, no, and I have no idea! So what is the real truth about deer vision? Can they see all of the colors that we can, or can they see colors that we can’t? I never knew for sure, so I decided to do a little research on the subject of deer vision. What I learned was a little surprising to me, so I thought I would share the information with others.
In many states, deer hunters are now required to wear blaze orange on at least a portion of their clothing, a vest, or a hat. In human vision, this color is very bright and easy to identify, so hunters resisted laws requiring its use. If we can see it so easily, it only makes sense to think that deer can see it too, so anyone wearing blaze orange is at a disadvantage when hunting, right? Many people recommend putting a green filter on your flashlight when traveling to your blind, stating that it won’t spook the deer like a regular white light. Is this one true? According to my research it appears not. While it is true that the deer can’t see the color green, they can definitely see the light coming out of your lamp! Using a green filter on your flashlight or headlamp won’t help you out much, if any. The best tactic to take is to use a flashlight holding it low to the ground, and to keep it pointed down. That headlamp you’re so fond of isn’t doing you any favors. It’s just projecting a beam of light that is sure to scare off all the wildlife, including deer. If you’re really worried about scaring the deer near your blind, go out to it an hour earlier to give the deer a chance to come
