This semester, we read two novels, (Touching Spirit Bear and The Game)The novels had one thing in common - the characters discovered something about themselves and someway improved their lives. I will compare and contrast the two novels and the common theme, self-discovery that both books share. Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen, shares the story of a juvenile delinquent, named Cole Matthews, only bound for trouble. Once he beats a classmate Peter Driscal, he is sent into a journey of self development, and forgiveness. Cole does this by getting help from the Justice Circle. They sent him to an island instead of prison, so he can learn some lessons about his actions. Throughout the book, Cole has many realizations about himself. The world is mainly run by robots, and many jobs have been taken by robots. Society is split, unemployed are the lowest of the low in society, while only a few are employed. Lisse and her friends end up being unemployed after graduating high school, and are left to the streets of their DA (Designated Area). They eventually hear of, The Game, and are invited through letter one day at their base. At first, it is a simulated other world where if someone gets hurt they are immediately zapped back to the simulation room. Eventually after many visits, the simulation did not end. It turns out they are on another planet and are planted here for relocation. Self-discovery is very important in this book, survival is needed. Lisse discovers her talents in doing daily tasks such as weaving, and collecting items. Benta’s farming skills are very important, and she discovers the Game is a new chance at living outside of robots. They all changed their view of their new life on this new planet, seeing it as a prize to have such a wonderful chance at
