Depression is never any easy task to overcome and certain treatments may work better for others but we will explore the cognitive approach to unipolar depression and friendly persuasion. Each one has their own effect and both can work to help your level of functioning go back to normal. In the cognitive model of unipolar depression, you have learned helplessness and negative thinking. Whereas in friendly persuasion you just try to change their mind on your own.
Negative thinking in unipolar depression is trying to change their maladaptive thinking which, is what they developed in their childhood that contributed to the unipolar depression, their error of thinking, and automatic thoughts. Finally, you have automatic thoughts which, is when you have a constant reminder of thoughts in your head that say you are not enough. Beck conquers these ideas by his cognitive therapy approach in which, he uses 4 phases that you go through. The first phase is increasing activities and elevating mood. In this phase the therapist will make and encourage the client to schedule fun activities that they enjoy and so that they become more confident. As they go through this process they start to notice a mood change.
