All Quiet on the Western Front is a book about World War I narrated by Paul, a German soldier fighting on the front lines. All Quiet on the Western Front has many different themes, such as the horrors of the war and dehumanization. In the epigraph of the novel, it is said that the book will “try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war.” The book claims that war is a force that not only wounds and maims, but also crushes character. Paul directly investigates why countries go to war, later facing issues of existence and mortality.
Introduction: After the prolonged and disparaging Thirty Years War, philosophers took up a new notion of life and how, what and why things are the way they are in the world. Many also took into effect believing in scientific reasoning’s over biblical outlooks, looking for logical answers to all the many mysteries of the world and the afterlife. Enlightenment philosophers also constructed ways in which they thought people should act. Enlightenment was a time of embracing logic and reasoning whilst rejecting untested beliefs and superstition. This time period occurred from the year 1694 until 1795. During this time writers used their medium of the written word to express their beliefs based on logic while denouncing old-world ideologies . During Enlightenment human nature was often put under scrutiny as thinkers strived to find what qualities resulted in the best possible human. In this piece of writing, the reader will be able to see the opinions of human nature held by three great thinkers from this time period: Voltaire, Jonathan Swift and Daniel Defoe.
Together, these two books have served as Voltaire’s guide through the changes witnessed during the enlightenment. He exposes the faults and problems of the past, and uses England as a model for the construction of the future. He shows us the depravity in organized religion, and the intolerance it has built, but also shows us the beginning of change starting in England. We see the negative aspects of the nobility, and the wars waged by monarchs on the basis of religion and conquests. In a similar way, the nobles in England have restricted the power of their monarch, have begun to place less importance on their titles, and become more active participants in trade.
Different factors had a part to play in starting or even propelling ‘the Age of Enlightenment’, including the rule of the Church and State which experienced a power struggle among them, in addition to the Western discovery of latest societies with noticeably exclusive cultural traditions and norms. Many intellectuals felt unhappy with the fixed social styles amongst their very own collectives, and angry at their governments' refusal to provide non-public rights.
