Trusting in the individual’s power to overcome the shortcomings of their own mind, and to transcend them, is one of the greatest mistakes known to man. Emerson teaches that individuals should trust themselves because “nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind”. The Dark romantic authors Poe and Hawthorne argue against that teaching because they believed that the sanctity of one's mind was actually quite limited. The human failings that they used to counter-argue Emerson’s teaching were fear, revenge, and distrust.
