“Why Marching Band Should be a Sport” By definition, a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment, which is exactly what marching band is. There's is a scoring system, and after almost every parade with bands, there's an award ceremony where the bands receive their scores and find out their rank. Marching itself, with the choreographed movements throughout the performance of the band, is already physically challenging. However, the people in it are also carrying around their instruments. Some of them, like the sousaphones, weigh 30-35 pounds.
Marching band a sport? Many people would say that is a crazy idea while others may understand it completely. Marching band is playing a musical instrument while marching a certain way to a tempo. Marching band is a form of entertainment that competes at competitions against other marching bands. Myself, knowing what marching band is and how it works from personal experience, marching band should be considered a sport.

Cheerleading isnt a sport but people are working really hard for other people to accept it as a sport. Cheerleading is an activity where you make a routine and perform it for points, and even win awards at competitions. When you perform you are against many teams in your division. Cheerleaders take a lot of time to train and prepare for the competition, also cheerleading is more physically demanding than other sports, lastly cheerleading meets all the requirements to be a sport.
It is extremely irritating when people do not recognize all the sports that are out there. Sure, there are a lot of them but if we can consider cheerleading a sport then I think that we can call marching band a sport. People do not understand why I am so easily annoyed when they diss this great sport. Marching band is the place where the intelligent students are.

Sports help students to develop many skill and characteristic that carry throughout their life. Cheerleading isn’t a real sport When people think of sports they think of homeruns being hit, touchdowns being thrown, goals being kicked, hockey players beating each other up, and hearing the swish of the net. Not a bunch of girls running back and forth doing flips and tricks. I believe cheerleading is not a sport for one of many reasons. First of all when a sport is being played whether it’s Baseball, Football, Soccer, Hockey, or Basketball there’s always periods, halves, quarters and the game usually takes about 3 hours. With cheerleading, they perform for about 3 minutes to a song in front of a couple judges.
I have been cheering for five years now. I can not remember the times when I was not a cheerleader, it is hard to imagine myself doing anything other than cheer or simply not cheering at all. I fell in love with the sport and within time, my passion towards it grew even more. Cheerleading consumed my life, it was my only focus. I was fortunate enough to grow up with coaches that pushed me to reach limits I did not even know I had, as well as teammates whom I shared the same passion towards the sport with.
How many people have been thrown up 10 feet in the air relying only on other people to catch them? “The History of Cheerleading,” says that, “The first known “cheer” in the US was shouted from the crowd at Princeton University in 1884” (History of Cheerleading, 2022, p.1). Sideline cheer involves chants and cheering for other teams, and going to competitions to perform routines. Competitive cheer consists of a 2-minute 30-second routine packed with stunts, tumbling, jumps, and dance. For the past 139 years, cheerleading has been a sport that many adore.
The United States of America prides itself on many things. While justice, freedom, or equality are all wonderful aspects of this great nation, its greatest pride is sports. Nationwide, millions of fans have allegiances to certain sports or teams, arguments erupt, and friendships are born all over simple games that Americans love. A debate among the myriad of United States sports fans has erupted; what is America’s sport? Another old school versus new school debate, the old fashioned fan will likely respond with baseball while a more modern fan may say football is America’s sport.

Throughout these past four years Columbia athletics hasn't just taught me my physical strength, but also the values of commitment, hard work, dedication, leadership, and trust. These values have shaped me into the person I am today and I will continue to use these skills to guide me through my future life.
Playing a school sport takes up majority of your afterschool and weekend time with practices and games. On top of that students are still expected to get 9 hours of sleep a night and come in with all of their homework finished and material memorized perfectly for the upcoming tests. Making school sports mandatory to students who are not athletically inclined and do not willing want to participate in a sport is taking away there free time and are not allowing them to focus on what they want to focus on. Students who do not participate in school sports are not aspiring athletes, and would rather focus on the goals they have set for there future. At the end of the routine, we all cheered with joy at our unexpected accomplishment. I was so proud of how far we had come in only a week. I was overjoyed to have shared that moment of excitement with all of my cheer sisters. No one recognizes cheerleading as a sport, but we work just as hard as other sports to accomplish the things we need to accomplish. People see the final product of our routine.
