Persuasive Essay: The Case Against High School Sports

Nearly eight million students currently participate in high school athletic in the United States. More than 480,000 compete as NCAA athletes. (www.ncaa.org). Sports help students to develop many skill and characteristic that carry throughout their life. The two articles that I have referred to my essay are "The Case Against High School Sports", by Amanda Ripley and "Psychological and Social Benefits of Playing True Sport", by The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Some people against that playing sports in school is harmful for students. However, to me, playing high school sports is beneficial for students because it teaches perseverance, prevents overweight's, and build confidence characters.

The first advantage of playing high school is teaches students perseverance. In many sports, the winners are not always about the strongest or fastest. It is the one that still believing they can win at the end of the games. Young students who were participated in sport are decrease in the rick of diseases that come from being obesity. For example: heart disease and diabetes. According to the USADA, " girls and young woman engaged in sports are less likely to be overweight or obese, depressed, smoke, use illicit drugs, or have unwanted teen pregnancies", (p.5). Controlled weight leads to happiness and helps students overcome the depression. Playing sports is not just about overweight, it is developing stronger muscles and bones that will be the foundation for future growth. The stronger you are, the less likely you will suffer from physical injury. Especially for young woman, they can protect themselves from endanger outside such as rape or sexual assault.
