Having sports integrated into high schools is important since it allows students to have the ability to gain valuable character traits needed for society with the addition of allowing lower income students to be able to enjoy the sport. Sports, especially team sports, give students the ability to learn valuable traits like “discipline, teamwork, a drive for success, the desire to be held accountable and a willingness to have their performance measured” (Sato). It is apathetic that students can’t play because of their background. Since necessities like food and paying bills have to be a family's top priority, their kids who could be star players are forced to not play because their families just can't afford it. Students can not decide what family they will be born into, so why do we exclude them from things just because of it? However, sports also have their downsides in that they take a lot of funding away from core classes, an excerpt from Amanda Ripley’s article “The Case against High School Sports” states that cheerleading is given around four times the amount of funding as math instruction.
