If you are an American student, or were one, you’re familiar with the American obsession with high school sports. High school athletes “rule” the school grounds, their power higher than any band kid or history teacher could ever be. Jocks are portrayed as bullies, stepping on students who are more focused on academics. Funds are supposedly given to sports teams rather than academic teams. But even with these stereotypes taking over American schools, we can not get rid of high school sports. High school sports are incredibly important to American students, teaching them not only how to work together, but it also allows them to have a sense of belonging in their teenage years. This even brings students together after rough patches in friendship in some instances! Are Sports Good For Kids? By Daniel Gould, Ph.D. Director, Institute for the Study of Youth Sports outlines the following, “For example, a multiyear study conducted in Michigan has shown that children who participate in sports have increased educational aspirations, closer ties to school, and increased occupational aspirations in youth.” While this doesn’t outright say children in high school sports learn more about teamwork, it does state that they have closer ties to school. From this, we can conclude that they are implying that students involved with high school sports work amongst themselves better, as well as with other aspects of their community. (BODY II) Staying close to teammates is amazing, but some people struggle to understand the worthiness of sports, claiming that high school sports teams are provided with more funding than academic clubs. This has some truth to it, sports teams cost a hefty amount of money- but it doesn't necessarily mean that they take away from educational extracurriculars! What is the Name of High School
