The two American Literature Gothics,“Young Goodman and Brown” and “The Man in the Black Suit” are interesting stories. Young Goodman Brown is a young man who just got married and he leaves his wife Faith to go on a journey. On his way he meets a mysterious man. The road he took is darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest and that is where Brown comes in contact with the devil as his guide. Brown sees all of the evil of the town such as the minister whipping girls and he also sees the woman who taught him Bible lessons as evil. When he leaves the forest he is not the same man he used to be. In “The Man in the Black Suit”, Gary is like Young Goodman Brown because Gary’s journey is into the woods. Young Goodman Brown, took place around 185 in a town in New England during the period of time when the Salem Witch Trials were taking place.The Man in the Black Suit was based on the story of Goodman Brown. The Man in the Black Suit, took place in 1914 in the First World War. Goodman Brown was a recently married man who cared very much for his wife Faith. When they go the journey they both leave something behind. While walking away they consider going back because they are concerned about what they are leaving behind. Goodman Brown looks back and sees his young wife Faith. Brown looks at her face and sees her worry and concern, but he knows that he must continue his journey. When Gary looks back he sees his mother waving to him. Gary knows how worried his mother is not only because Gary is going into the forest alone, but she already lost her other son. As Goodman Brown, Gary continues his journey and leaving his mother behind. They both hear sounds, they smell things, and they feel the gloom that lurks within the forest. While in the forest they both encounter an evil being. They both claim that the evil being before them must be the devil. The devil knows both of their pasts because the devil knows about Goodman Brown's grandfather. The devil assures Goodman that the help he is asking for is not something to be frightened because both his father and grandfather has asked him for help. The devil who speaks to Gary refers to his as “fisherboy”. The devil kills the bee in Gray’s lap with a simple clap of his hands. The devil refers to the death of his brother as if he had been there and gave detail to what happened to his brother. He also informed Gary that his mother was suffering a bee sting and that would end her life.
