Dystopian society, a community in which it is the opposite of a utopian society. A utopian society is a perfect place for all people. There are many examples of both these in all sorts of places. Just like in Fahrenheit 451, 2081, and Uglies. There are many examples of dystopian societies in books, films, and many other sources of presentations. These societies can have many differences and similarities to today’s modern American society. Three societies that people can compare the modern society to are Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the fire dept. 2081, the daily life Last but not least Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, laws and what you can and can 't choose to do. The first comparison is putting the fire departments in the modern society …show more content…
Just as 451, they have both similarities and differences in their daily lives. One similarity is that they both use technology for daily use, but the way they use them is very different. In 2081 they use it to keep people from thinking differently than everyone else in the society. As for the modern society, the people use it for entertainment, to make things more simple, and education. Another way they are similar is that they both have news to report to the people the latest events. However, in 2081 there is only one news station so that no one can have different opinions on what is going on in the world. In the real world, all people can believe what they want so there are different news stations with different opinions. “Journalists each day structure this chaos, so that the public receives it sorted out and neatly packaged into stories, the same day on the radio, television or online and the next day in newspapers” (What is News?). Just like this quote says, each day new opinions, reports, and stories made from different people are broadcasted and shown off on many different platforms of social media, allowing there to be many different ways of thinking about situations. At last, law enforcement. Both societies have laws to keep their community how they believe it should be. But, the laws they have are much different. In 2081 no one can be stronger than anyone else so the …show more content…
“‘But it’s a trick, Tally. You’ve only seen pretty faces your whole life. Your parents, your teachers, everyone over sixteen. But you weren’t born expecting that kind of beauty in everyone, all the time. You just got programmed into thinking anything else is ugly’” (Westerfeld 83). As Shay said, what Tally thinks real life is like, and how things go, it really is not right because she has not experienced the real world that they are living in yet. This proves it’s set in a dystopian because, in a perfect world, all people are treated the same for how they look and aren’t required to get surgery to make them look “pretty”. There probably aren’t very many people wanting to live the world of the Uglies which goes to show how horrific it truly is. Since Uglies has such a different and dystopian society they really have no similarities other than that they both have plastic surgery. The only thing is that in the book’s society, it is a law that you must get surgery to become pretty, but in the real world people can choose to get it to make themselves look better. “Surgeons can reshape the appearance of body parts through cosmetic surgery.” (Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery) This just goes to show how terrible and different the Uglies society
