Living without a spouse is a big part of monasticism (William). The Monasticism religious cannot and does not exist in societies that are not literate. Societies that are not literate cannot have a monastic institutes. The reason is they have religious doctrine that they can’t use in societies that can not read (William). All of monasticism has its mainstay of theological conditions that city life just cannot provide. Withdrawal from society is important because the contributions of superiority usually cannot be obtained in the surroundings of everyday life (William). Anthony of the Desert. He was born on 251 A.D. (Saint Athanasius). Another name for him is Antony or Antonios (Flaubert). He is considered the founder of monasticism. His feast day is January 17. (“St. Anthony”). Anthony was born into a wealthy family, and his parents expected him to follow in their wealthy footsteps. After his parents died when Anthony was in his twenties, he inherited every penny his parents had. But around that time, Anthony heard a reading from the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus is telling a rich young man "If you want to be perfect, go and sell everything you have and give the money to the poor." Anthony honestly believed that he was that young man, so he did what Jesus had said and give everything he had to the poor.
