Throughout history, there have been vast empires that have ruled this world. Great leaders such as Genghis Khan and Charlemagne have ruled the lands of this very earth that people live on today. As historians have dug through the past and come up with various opinions on how successful these empires were, there is controversy over the tools and strategies they have used to come to the conclusion of how successful these lands actually were. Historians should measure the success of a civilization by using the measures of the Social Progress Index, Gross Domestic Product, and Corruptions Perceptions Index to the same degree with equal emphasis on each tool to get a full and well rounded image of the success of a civilization. Historians should use the Social Progress Index (SPI) to measure the success of civilizations. A country’s success is not solely based on how much money they are generating or how rich they are. There are other aspects that should be taken into account, such as the quality and standard of living for the country. The Social Progress Index measures how well a country is doing by combining multiple aspects of life such as basic human needs and well-being. For example, a country can be the richest in terms of money, but the poorest in terms of sanitary living conditions for its people or the level of personal safety for individuals. There is no point in having a huge sum of money in your hands when people are dying of starvation or unsanitary living conditions. The Mongolian Empire was the most successful empire in history.
