Yesterday, October 4, 1579, The Capulets and Montgues took the streets of Verona, Italy where they battled leaving two murdered. On this gloomy and rainy afternoon, Tybalt, a member of the Capulet and Mercutio, a member of the Montague, had an encounter on the streets where their dispute went too far, leading to the stabbing of each other leaving citizens traumatized. Benvolio, a dear friend of Mercutio and a witness of the murder steps up to describe the incident.
Benvolio and Mercutio were walking down the streets that afternoon when they were approached by Tybalt and some other Capulet men. As the conversation got heated between the Capulets and Montagues, Mercutio mentioned fighting first as Benvolio remembers Mercutio saying, “Here’s my fiddle stick. Here’s that shall make you dance. Zounds, ‘consort.’” Benvolio says that he was trying to be rational and encouraging them to take it somewhere else private or solve things without violence. However, Tybalts threat to Romeo exasperated Mercutio, provoking him to start a sword fight with Tybalt. Romeo jumps in between the fight and one of the citizens who witnessed it described it as, “Romeo was trying to stop this horrifying fight, but Tybalt somehow went under Romeo’s hand and stabbed Mercutio. Citizens began to flee the streets scared for their life!” Mercutio was stabbed deeply into his heart by Tybalt’s sword.
