Comparing Aristotle's Purpose And Nature Of Government

The foundational view points formed by Aristotle and the early Christian writers on the purpose and nature of government have laid the basis for all major types of government and even shaped the daily routine of the average citizen with their analysis of the different possible and theoretical forms of ruling. Humans have strived for peace and order through virtuous means since their initial creation. Through this pursuit, the ideas of who should rule, how to rule, and what entails being a good citizen emerged giving life to the political field and government in its rawest form. To this day, the writings of these men have shaped countries, regimes, and entire cultures. Though their opinions may differ, the impact felt is nearly everlasting.

Aristotle tries though by explaining that justice comprehends all the virtues, since acting justly consists essentially of acting in accordance with all the virtues. Calvin’s idea of justice revolves around moral law which is comprised of two parts: the first to simply worship God with pure faith and piety, and the other to embrace all men with sincere love and affection. () He goes on to say that, “[God’s] eternal and immutable will is that we are all to worship him and mutually love one another.” () Luther when speaking of the general way humans should be treated and dealt with, references the law of love. The law of love entails using your judgment of a situation to help or even pardon your neighbor. For example, if someone borrows money or food, but cannot pay you back in a timely fashion, the law of love bids that if you are able to afford such a loss, you take it. () Luther considers this law to be easy to follow if you are a righteous. He likens a righteous man to a good tree. It takes no instruction or law for a good tree to bear good fruit. In the same way a righteous man should always be willing to be in accordance and even go beyond the law at all times, including waving it out of love.
