Have you ever had to fight against someone of a higher authority? Guy Montag and Atticus are very similar in both of the novels, Fahrenheit 451, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Both Atticus and Montag show how their characters fight back against their respective societies. Montag had succeeded in his thoughts of books being unbanned, however, Atticus had failed to fight for Tom Robinson as Tom was sent to jail and later killed for trying to escape. The first example of fighting against a higher authority was shown with Atticus. Atticus is a brave man, as he takes on being a lawyer for Tom Robinson. In the text it states, "This case, Tom Robinson's case, is something that goes to the essence of a man's conscience--Scout, I couldn't go to church and worship God if I didn't try to help that man." (Lee 107) Tom Robinson was falsely accused of raping Bob Ewell’s daughter, Mayella. First off, Montag had fought against a higher authority, which was his work as a firefighter. The same thing happened in To Kill a Mockingbird, where Atticus fights against the court, or the other white people while defending a black man. In the text Atticus states, "Link, that boy might go to the chair, but he's not going till the truth's told. . . And you know what the truth is." (Lee 146) Both Atticus and Guy Montag are brave, and compassionate towards what they do. However, there are also differences in how they fight back. Atticus has young children so he always has to deal with them, whereas Montag is more young in freedom with nothing holding him back. Finally, the last difference between Atticus and Montag is that Atticus is much more patient and more dedicated towards his cause of fighting back.
