Graphic novels seem to be much more captivating to read because they have more pictures and less words. The pictures have powerful messages while the text tells the story. The authors of graphic novels are often very talented and can develop a story, with the illustrator, using mostly graphics. We can use the pictures to let us infer what’s happening later in the story and tell us what’s happening now. Even though reading usually consists of pages filled with words, March by Aydin and Powell uses different text styles, color contrasts, and metaphoric symbols to tell the story of the Civil Rights movement. Aydin and Powell enjoy fusing different text styles in the book “March”. A lot of the time when reading a book, we try to look for the climax to spot what is important. In this trilogy the authors often bolded or underlined important words or phrases in order to emphasize them. The contrast of white on black really helps some words and pictures stand out (see figure 2). Graphic novels can be written in color or in black and white. In March, Aydin and Powell chose black and white to really tell the story and use the great contrast of black and white to their advantage. When white is printed on a black background, the white tends to stand out a lot and vice versa. This helps the readers find all the words we need to see since they are not in rows like a regular book (see figure 2). During the story when a violent protest is taking place, the page is usually black with white contrasting words and pictures. This helps the readers’ mind to connect the negative color of black to the negative time in the Civil Rights
