Who gets to decide the consequences of actions committed, and if they are proportionate to the original decision itself? People make decisions unknowing of the results. Their original decision could result in getting justice, getting what they deserve, or possibly getting wronged. As shown in this essay, there are various examples of literature, including novels and short stories, that discuss and symbolise the consequences of decisions made and their results in justice. Both the novel Between Shades Of Gray by Ruta Sepety and the short stories “Marionettes Inc.” by Ray Bradburt and “The Possibility Of Evil” by Shirley Jackson all contain and debate this theme. At the end of the book, Elene does pass away. She passes away from diseases from the horrible condition she was forced into in the labour camps. There are various consequences to her decision to be resilient and put her kids first. She did pass away due to malnourishment and diseases from not eating, which is a first consequence. She didn't deserve to die, she deserved to live, which makes that consequence not justifiable. But her original decision did as well bring justice to her children, it provided them with the means to work hard and try their best to get out of the camp. She left them with her legacy, her determination, and the hope that she had always had so that her children could bring justice to her and themselves. To exemplify, Miss Strangeworth thinks of herself as the town jewel, the last member of her family that started the origin of the whole town. With this idolization of herself, she has perceived herself to be the keeper of the town's peace. She takes that role so seriously that she decides she needs to know everyone's business and shares the secrets said and kept by others. Every day she carves out time in her day to write letters to certain people about their opinion and the opinions of others.
