Comparing 'Bluebeards And The Bloody Chamber' By Angela Carter

Angela Carter’s “The Bloody Chamber” is much like the original fairy tale story “Bluebeards Castle” but modified in a few ways. Like in “Bluebeards”, Angela Carter tells the story of a rich, sadistic man, the Marquis, who kills his wives and collects their bodies in a chamber of the castle. The Marquis finds a younger woman to marry him, moves her to his castle, takes her virginity and has to leave town for a while due to business. He provides her with keys to each room in the house. There is one room in particular that he explains is off limits but leaves the key to it anyway, knowing the temptation would cause for her to find out what is in there. The heroine is eager to find out what is in the room and when she does she finds the bodies of his past wives. Not being able to hide her findings from the Marquis, he plans to kill her by beheading her. This is where a modification take place. In “Bluebeards”, the brothers of the wife come in and save her from the husband whereas in “The Bloody Chamber”, it is her mother who comes in to save her by killing the Marquis. In “Bluebeards” is the happy ever after ending where the heroine inherits the wealth of the Marquis and remarries living a happy life is not the same look Carter was going for. In “The Bloody Chamber”, Carter once again goes against the conventional fairytale finish. Instead of going off and living a wealthy life with the Marquis’s money, the heroine decides to give away a lot his assets and turn the castle into a school for the blind. She later marries the blind piano tuner, Jean-Yves, and they live a decent life. The purpose Carter has behind this is to show people that a women are and can be independent. They don’t need a man or his money to live a happy life. Also. By marrying Jean-Yves, she shows that they are equal because he is in no position to look after her but she appreciates and loves him
