Unit 7 is a rather long section covering both Rome and China 's powerful and expansive empires during the time period 300 BCE - 300 CE. The Han Dynasty and Imperial Rome were very similar in their unprecedented scale and duration. Although they did operate in differing ways, for example, Rome relied on slaves to expand its workforce, while the Chinese 's economy lived off of free peasant farmers. The Chinese benefited from having an overwhelming population that would benefit the bureaucracy and supply political stability for the Hans. When it came to the Roman Empire, religion did not have the same impact that Confucianism had on the dynasties in China.
Another factor that shows the difference between Athens and Han China are their types of government. Document 4 is a quote from Pericles, an Athenian leader. Pericles stated, “Our form of government is called a democracy because its administration is in the hands, not of a few, but of the whole peoples” (Doc 4). This quote here shows the main difference between Han China and Classical Athens. IN Athens, which upholds direct democracy, all free male citizens are entitled to vote, while in China, only the emperor and his advisors can.
In the First Millennium, the Ancient Civilizations of Han and Rome societies had clear appreciation for the technological advancement though the Roman concentrated on the mathematical and scientific advancements, while looking down upon the laboring tools invented to increase agricultural efficiency that were appreciated by the Hans. Roman concentrated intently on mathematical and scientific advancements after they increase their slave labor which the Roman cared little about. However, Han highly prized agricultural tool for it efficiency and its ability increase production. The classical Greeks used democracy as their primary form of government and citizens all had a role in the government. The Han empire used a monarchy with an emperor at the head and everyone else in the empire had little to no power. Although the Classical Greeks and Chinese shared similar ideas about the role of women in society, their ideas about government and the role of an individual in government were more different than similar because the Greeks believed in more of a democratic government rather
During the era of classical societies, the Han and Roman empires were two vast cosmopolitan societies which dominated regions all throughout Eurasia. In regards to the fall of the Han and Roman empires, both were similar in that they fell victim to internal government decay, but different in that Rome fell to foreign invasions, while Han suffered from rebellions of their own people. The Han and Roman empires were similar in their fall in that they both suffered from internal decay, specifically of their governments. In the Han empire, land distribution problems that were originally sought to be fixed by the “Socialist emperor” Wang Mang allowed large landowners to become even more influential than they previously were.
The Qin and Han Dynasties were similar in that they both believed in a strong centralized government, which strengthened and unified their empires, but they differed in that the Qin followed the strict Legalism while the Han followed the more flexible Confucianism, and the way they interacted with outsiders; the Qin tended to be more defensive of outsiders while the Han were more interactive and wanted to build relationships with foreigners. First, the Qin and Han Dynasties believed in a strong centralized government. The implementation of a strong centralized government led to the success and growth of their dynasties. The centralized government creates a pyramid of power and influence, with the main leader, the emperor, on top.
Political integration between both empires had both similarities and differences, most notably being different with the ways they chose those to rule. In Imperial Rome, bureaucracy relied on local elites (landholders) and the middle-class citizens to control provinces. Imperial Rome was far less complex, compared to the bureaucracy of Han China. Many official positions within the government were bought or became hereditary through family wealth as opposed to earned by merit, due to this fact, the Roman bureaucracy often suffered from poor governance. One of the reasons the empire was so unified even
China on the other hand had more problems in its bureaucracy and civic unrest. For example, some peasants who had lost their farms had to sell their children into service. A third difference is that as previously stated, China had a successful revival while Rome did not. Rome divided and the Western half survived but was diminished by attempts to regulate the economy and decline tax revenue ’s.
Both of these dynasties are very similar, especially the fact that both were culturally rich and known to be “Golden Ages” in Chinese history. Both of these dynasties saw many advances in technology, with the invention of the compass and paper. Trade with other countries was a major occurrence during both the Han and Song Dynasty. Another factor that connects these two dynasties is the fact that they both use a common written language for those who were educated. The examination taken in order to receive a government position that was started during the Han Dynasty was also used during the Song Dynasty, so that people born into class were not automatically given government positions, but those who were intellectual and capable to hold a position were given the opportunity.
The Han Dynasty in China and the Roman Empire shared many similarities and differences when it came to political rule and the nature of their political authority. The most significant difference between the two is how the Han dynasty enacted policies that were shaped to counter the wrongdoings of the previous Qin dynasty, whereas the Roman Empire enacted policies shaped to create and promote peace and stability. The difference in the two empire’s coming to power was to account for their variance in political rule. After the Qin dynasty, the Han ruled China for four centuries, enacting numerous political changes and governing one of the most efficacious dynasties in Chinese history.
The Roman, Chinese and Indian empire are the three main empires that exist in the past and inspired the rest of the empires that came afterwards. The Roman empire used trade and government to get where it was. The Chinese empire used legalism and a strong army. The Indian empire used religion to be successful. An empire consists of many different features, but there are some specific key features that makes an empire a strong and powerful empire and it usually consist of a strong military, effective leader, religion, trade and a lot more different features.
Han China and Mauryan India had many similarities. They were both bureaucracies, they both had emperors, and both empires established their laws on religious belief. They also had a lot of contrasting ideas for positioning their people, and they had contrasting ideas for their different religious standpoints. One empire put more weight on logic, and the other more on religion.
Ancient Mesopotamia and Ancient China shared the same type of government. Although Ancient Mesopotamia began ruling its lands with priest kings eventually came to rule just as Ancient China, both civilization believed kings had divine approval. Social classes among both civilization followed the upper class, middle class, lower class structure. Upper class among the two consisted of the higher gods, kings, priest etc. Middle class consisted of peasant farmers, merchants, fisherman etc.
For instance, them two had sorted out governments yet Egypt 's was a Theocracy and China 's was a Monarchy. Social pecking order varied between the two, too. In Egypt, the Pharaoh was the sun and stars over the entire of Egypt, he was accepted to be a resurrection of God. In china be that as it may, home and family were at the focal point of life. The two both assembled incredible structures, yet the Egyptians made Pyramids while the Chinese constructed the Great Wall of China.
As an Armenian I have often been exposed to the history of my ancestors, particularly relating to the genocide of 1915.The story of my great-grandparents’ escape, aided by a Turkish family, showed that history is very much about the relation between humans. To enhance our understanding of the present, the study of past civilizations, individuals and events is crucial. The past has shaped the society we live in now, and through close analysis of historical events such as the Holocaust, we can better understand the dynamics of today’s world. It is for this reason that I have decided to pursue history. I spend much of my time exploring history.
