Comparing Cask Of Amontillado And The Masque Of The Red Death

Poe’s writing style is all the same throughout all of his stories. Poe wrote, “Cask of Amontillado”, “The Masque of the Red Death”, “The Fall of the House of Usher” and the poem, “Spirits of the Dead.” All three of these stories and the poem have death and depression. These stories and the poem represent Poe’s life and what he went through as a child. At many times in Poe’s life he often felt alone and depressed. When Poe was very young, his mother died of tuberculosis, Poe was then split from his siblings and adopted. The family that adopted Poe was wealthy but Poe’s foster mother also passed away from tuberculosis. John Allen, Poe’s adoptive father did not like really like him and never shared any money with Poe even throughout his adulthood and into college. After this Poe moved in with his Aunt Clem, his younger brother Henry, and Cousin Virginia. Poe began to become close to Virginia and they got married, she was 13 and he was 27. In the poem, “Spirits of the Dead” Poe says, ‘Mid dark thoughts of the grey tomb-stone.” This shows that the character is at a cemetery and that might be where they spend most of their time. In “The Masque of the Red Death” the main character arrives at a house that has a shudder some atmosphere, “deep in the seclusion of one of his castellated abbeys.” The story, “Fall of the House of Usher” tells how the atmosphere is uneasy, “I felt that I breathed an atmosphere of sorrow. An air of stern, deep, and irredeemable gloom hung over and pervaded all.” In “Cask of Amontillado” the story takes place in the catacombs of Montressor, “between two of the colossal supports of the roof of the catacombs.” Each of these settings impact the stories and poem, they create tension because this is where everything takes place.
