Throughout the course, many pieces of literature were studied including Alan Moor’s “Watchmen” and Shakespeare's “Hamlet”. Both works include very different characters who encounter similar struggles. Laurie, a main protagonist in “Watchmen”, is a former vigilante in New York City turned keeper to the happiness of Dr.Manhattan. And Ophelia, a main protagonist in “Hamlet” is a young women with no purpose other than to potentially become Hamlet's wife.The documentary “The Goodbyes” presents the main topic of mental illness that is a distinct theme in the parent child relationships presented in Watchmen and Hamlet. Laurie and Ophelia both experienced love and loss through letting parental influence determine their destiny, which led to their eventual struggle with mental health. Laurie Juspeczyk, like most people, had aspirations in life with dreams of working with animals; none of which mattered due to her mother's burdensome influence in her life. Instead, Laurie followed her mother's wishes of following in her crime fighting career and becoming Silk Spectre II. This lead to a loss of self sufficiency that caused her ultimate unhappiness in life. Laurie's mother acted as more of an agent, designing tight latex costumes and taking her daughter to crimebuster meetings in limousines. Although the story of “Hamlet” took place in the 16000s, where a great deal of parental influence on female characters were thought of as normal, this view of a typical family lead Ophelia's life to be determined by her
