What is the purpose of life? For thousands of years, mankind has been trying to come up with an answer to that exact question, but have come up empty handed over and over again. Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Oates’s preface to Heart of Darkness both express the same conception of human life - that it is rather meaningless.
