James Clavell’s Day to Remember and Martyn Hereward’s The Clearing are both overwhelming short stories that demonstrate how different people experience shocking situations. The two texts are a part of The New Paper Windows, ‘Anthology of Short Stories’ book, produced by Richard Baines. Day to Remember is concentrated around a lonely woman, Maudie. The Clearing shows many points of view, featuring the perspectives of Captain Maitland, Private O’Brien, Sergeant Fallon, and Private Bushell. The two texts both accommodate a main theme of War and History, due to the fact that they are both based on events occurring in the war time period. Both of the protagonists that are killed die in peace, however, each text is composed in different ways that show different perspectives about how the characters deal with what they are going through. There are many similarities and differences between the two texts. The first similarity is both short stories are set in the time period of World War II. Maudie in Day to Remember explains that her home in London has been hit by a V-2 bomb. It is also explained that she is “…lying in the rubble...”. Captain Maitland in The Clearing tells the story about how he has been shot by the Japanese in the war. In addition, the texts portray how both characters die in peace. Maudie states in her story how “There's a god in heaven and, all in all, you've been as good as a person can be. So there is nothing to fear.” Which shows to the reader that she is accepting the thought of dying and finding a positive side to it. Captain Maitland
