Pudd'nhead Wilson Ted Talk Speech When I hold up these two books, what do you see? The obvious answer would be Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling and Pudd’nhead Wilson by Mark Twain. However, those are not the answers I’m looking for. When I see these two books, I see two classics in literature that have affected the world in very different ways. Harry Potter teaches us to always believe in family, because they are always there. Whereas Pudd’nhead Wilson teaches us the inferior differences between race, and how that can affect how we treat others. Both of these books are considered classics; both for different reasons, but each one is just as highly respected as the other. When you get down to it, a book has two appearances: hardback or paperback, which can be decided on based off of how much you wish to pay for this collection of ideas that someone else is trying to sell. With people, however, you don’t get the little snippet or summary of a person’s personality the way you do with a book. When you read a book, you look at the cover, read the summary on the back, and Bam!, you know exactly what you’re getting; but with a person it’s different. With people, their appearance does not always represent who they are; and their race does not reflect the place they deserve in the social hierarchy. Yet during the time period of Mark Twain’s Pudd’nhead Wilson, that’s how the human population saw things. Most people will spend more money, to get the better version. With books, you use this extra dollar to buy a hardback copy; which will last longer and also look nicer for a longer period of time. This extra dollar or two is going into the love someone has for this sacred object in hopes if preserving it for as long as possible. Back in the 1800’s however, people would spend more money on a slave because they looked stronger, and could survive the harsh conditions they had to work in. Although this meant that these people could last longer as well, it was so they could work harder and continue to work the “whole long day” as long as there was “light to see by” (Twain 92). It wasn’t a mode of protection or nourishment as it is with a book; it was a merchant trying to find labour to create a profit. In modern time, a similar process still exists. Nowadays, people are paid less and less for their marvelous work efforts, and a raise is simply something used to motivate them. Since slavery was outlawed in 1865, bosses, or masters, still find a way to manipulate and punish their workers. As stated earlier, black women only earn 64 cents to every white man’s dollar. 36 cents are taken from them and given either to other men, or put into funding the main company (Temple). Due to teachings from parents, who learned from grandparents, who learned from great grandparents, African American people are still
