“When people rely on surface appearances and false racial stereotypes, rather than in-depth knowledge of others at the level of the heart, mind and spirit, their ability to assess and understand people accurately is compromised.” James A. Forbes said. People have often stereotyped races and ethnicities because based less on fact than rumor and exaggeration. But, many never think through why they did it; they just did it because the society did it. In the novel Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes, in general, most of the characters prejudged others because of their race. One character in the novel, Raul Ramirez, is particularly bothered by how people expect Puerto Ricans and other Hispanics to be. But, Raul really loves painting. He is a really great painter. He helped Mr. Ward decorate his classroom. Raul is extremely confident in his artwork. Raul likes to paint self-portraits to work on his skills. He comes up to paint in Mr. Ward’s classroom during lunch. I love to spend my time reading. I read books a lot; whether it’s on the computer or paperbacks and hard covers I love to read it. But, I am more into fiction and fantasy than biographies and non-fiction.
