With the difficult task of getting these kids to read, Ms. Gruwell must assign them certain books to read. These books all relate to the kids in one way or another, which makes the kids actually want to read them. There are also some very common themes that are displayed throughout each book they read, which also ties into their lives. Some of the books that Ms. Gruwell assigned were Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl and Zlata’s Diary: A Child’s Life in Sarajevo. There was also a book about a young man involved in gang life.
