In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, where the scars of conflict still fester, a character named Winston finds himself thrown into a tough battle against a totalitarian regime led by the mysterious figure of Big Brother. This is a slogan the Party uses to show its control over the citizens. They do this to scare the citizens and make them feel like they are always under constant surveillance. The Party knows all; this is shown by the quote, "the telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it” (Orwell 2-3). This supports that the Party knows everything and is always watching. In Airstrip One, technology takes away the freedom given to the citizens, which differs from the real world where improvements in technology give more freedom to people. In "1984," Orwell highlights that "The telescreen, which was used to instruct the populace, blared an endless stream of propaganda and monitored citizens' every move, installing fear and ensuring compliance” (Orwell C 3). This shows how the Party caused fear in the citizens by using different technology which makes them feel like they are being watched and losing their freedom.
