Nonfiction, as a genre of literature, has an extensive range. Nonfiction is defined as "prose writing that is based on facts, real events, and real people.” Nonfiction genres are determined by their tone, content, and narrative technique. There are many different types of non-fiction. For example, gender, as a genre for the sexes, is defined as "the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex." The most common genders are male and female. Gender genres are determined by the baby's sex at the time of conception; the baby will be female (XX) or male (XY). Dweck and Eliot share similar writing techniques, all of which are necessary for their genres. Both authors use an abundance of sources and statistics. The Truth About Boys and Girls, this statistic reads: “Verbal ability… at least 50 percent determined by a child’s environment and language exposure." Eliot uses an abundance of these statistics; they have a tremendous effect on the authenticity of the text as well as serving as strong support for all claims that are proposed. Dweck uses interviewed quotes to support her claim stating that children with a growth mindset will go above and beyond when it comes to challenging their intelligence: "I think intelligence is something you have to work for… it isn’t just giving to you” (2)." Both Dweck and Eliot are extremely evidence oriented; not only do they utilize statistics, but they also use testimonies and related experiments to support their topics. Dweck uses an experiment conducted by the University of Hong Kong, that has classes in that are all in English and the new students who are not fluent in English, are offered a choice whether they want to take the class or not. This addition to the text adds a dynamic change in tone that is still relative to the main topic. There is an abundance of similarities between the two texts. These similarities are what connects them to the genre of nonfiction. The differences between the authors that are worthy of being noted are in their differing writing styles.
