Would you challenge the rules of your society if you found them unjust? Do you know the appropriate time to challenge the rules? Throughout the narratives, the authors express when they believe the right time to challenge unjust rules is, speaking through their characters and experiences. In the three narratives, the characters and authors experience different events leading to contrasting journeys. In Letter from Birmingham Jail Dr.King educates the readers that there isn't a specific right time; it is always the right time as long as it is morally right to challenge the rules and is done in a proper and peaceful method. I would be the first to advocate obeying the laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey the laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. I would agree with St. Augustine that “an unjust law is no law at all.” Dr. King strongly suggests that moral responsibility has a major role in deciding when the appropriate time to challenge the rules is. Moral responsibility is the praise or punishment for an act in accordance with one's beliefs on what is just and unjust. From his journey in life, he personally learned what is right and wrong by circumstances. Furthermore, Dr.King writes “One who breaks an unjust law must do so openly, lovingly, and with a willingness to accept the penalty.who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law” (King 20). King believes that one must always peacefully protest against unjust laws and before they start to protest against the rules they need to realize that there are consequences and accept
