The meaning of life has always been a dilemma and continues to be one. Hamlet’s famous dilemma will never get lost as it is definitely a fundamental dilemma now-a-days. In today’s society human life is always in search of what it means to be or not to be. This question is constantly being asked, be it from the idea of where Hamlet meant it as to live or to die. One can see this as a question of to be part of something or not to be part of something; to be part of the in crowd or not to be. The meaning of life is intertwined with so many other aspects in our daily routine, whether it is in the friends we have, social media, and or in our family. This is evident in a book I read called “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”, where internal conflict plays an important part in motivating the main character. The internal conflict can have a negative outcome like Hamlet but it can also have a positive outcome like in Perks of Being a Wallflower. This just goes to show us how internal conflicts play an important part in a person’s daily routine and how big of an impact it can make on an individual and on society as a whole. Both Hamlet and The Perks of Being a Wallflower engage the audience into thinking and asking the hard questions and coming up with the answers that are right for them. The Perks of Being a Wallflower deals with teenage suicide and how it is an issue that is current in our society. By dealing with the quest for being and not being, for living or not living, these novels provide us with food for thought and makes us ask those hard questions that can relate to our own lives. Hamlet, like Charlie in Perks of Being a Wallflower, is in a state of distress at the beginning of the play/novel. Hamlet is in distress for the murder of his father and Charlie for being bullied.
