Life can unexpectedly change in the blink of an eye. Once it does, you may choose to continue living with it and Come of Age, or you may choose to give up and get left behind. Sometimes, when someone is trying to learn from a mistake that is life changing, it takes courage to keep going and Come of Age. In the classic piece The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, the realistic fiction book If I Stay by Gayle Forman, and the dystopian novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, characters go through substantial hardships that effectively alter their lives in order to Come of Age. In the dystopia where they live, there are many unusual features. They all have jobs, and there are a lot of strict rules to follow. Some things one may find unusual is the fact that all people are incapable of holding memories as well as seeing color unless they were given special jobs that would give them different abilities. One job that was especially rare and major was the Receiver of Memory because this job allows for whoever has it to receive and remember memories for everyone and the Receiver is given the ability to see color and things others can’t. Jonas was very puzzled to find that he had been selected as the Receiver, he didn’t even know what that was until it was announced: “‘Jonas has been selected.’ He blinked. What did that mean? He felt a collective, questioning stir from the audience. They, too, were puzzled. In a firm, commanding voice she announced, ‘Jonas has been selected as our next Receiver of Memory’ [..] ‘Such a selection is very, very rare’” (Lowry 60). Jonas didn’t expect to be given a job that was very rare and special. As a Receiver of Memory, he would have to hold important memories that can be used to advise the elders, by tapping into the past. In The Outsiders, they have to overcome issues in social class in order to be able to flourish. In If I Stay, Mia matured when she chooses to continue fighting and stay. In The Giver, Jonas is given many rare and special life-changing responsibilities that he must overcome in order to grow. In life, people are given many abilities and differences that they must learn to go through in their own way in order to learn. They must do this for all the people that are counting on them, even through tough life-changing occurrences. This applies to everyone experiencing a life-altering event, no matter how big or how small. One must Come of Age and learn from all the circumstances that life throws at them. Don’t be the one to fall apart when life changes are made. Keep going. You can do anything you set your mind
