The main character and protagonist in this part of the book, is Ichabod, the schoolmaster of Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod was stern and to the letter schoolmaster, and a very pompous and selfish person. The main character in the second part of the book is Rip Van Winkle. Rip is a very lazy man who would be perfectly fine to stay to himself and just live off what he can get without working. Unfortunately for him his wife, Dame Van Winkle is a lady who wants to get things done and will not allow her husband Rip, to just sit around and do nothing.
