Ella Shenkle Mrs. Ramsey British Literature April 12, 2024 Lord of the Flies Parallels Lord of the Flies was written in 1954 by William Golding right after World War II. This book features many references to violence and savagery, but it also has many biblical parallels. The themes of both Lord of the Flies and Genesis 2:15-17 and 3:1-24 are very similar. The main theme of Lord of the Flies is the tension between man’s urge for savagery and the controlling nature of civilization. And the main theme of Genesis 2:15-17 and 3:1-24 is how sin enters the world and what happens when sinful desires rule over someone. One of the first examples of parallelism that you can see in the book is the island. The island that they crash onto and are stranded on is very similar to the Garden of Eden in the Bible. The Garden of Eden is a beautiful place with the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil which is the “scar” of the Garden. In the book, Ralph says, “This is our island. It’s a good island.” In the Bible God says after he created everything that “It was good”. And then in Genesis 2:16-17 God says, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will surely die.” This implies that the evil that is brewing on the island is going to come out and all hell will break loose. The next parallel is the fact that all of these kids were unashamed, just like Adam and Eve. The book says, “He undid the snake-clasp of his belt, lugged off his shorts, and pants, and stood there naked”. “but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed
