The music starts, and that cues him to transition his state of mind from idle to motion. His firm body slowly turns into smooth water. He moves with little effort but still shows powerful motion. The connection with his chest, legs, and arms are in perfect balance. He gently goes down into the floor without a sound and ascend his legs up to the skies. He gets back up in a comfortable and circular motion with ease. His body is ready as hinted by his strong form. The music gets intense and he takes two further steps to fly up to let the air around him take him away for a moment. Already, his feet smoothly decelerate his flight after. He goes backwards in a fluid motion like a snake. His hands are ready to guide him through his journey into almost a state of perfection and beauty. As his hands and arms twirl around him, his body started to follow the movement. His feet were pointed with strength and ready to move to the next move. He finishes up with the body closing down like the sunset as the music starts to tone down. This is Maxwell Foster and his life with dance. Foster also became a teacher while living in Ecuador. He said, “I wanted to dedicate myself full time to dance. Performance wasn’t enough to sustain basic living requirements so I began teaching as a way of supplementing that financial necessity.” Finance was a struggle through his dance career due to the poor wages. Pursuing dance to work in a city that has a small community for dance, made him struggle. “Unless the company you work for pays all the bills, then you need to do something on the side.” Foster stated. “While earning my degree I had to work as a teaching artist in the community with TUSD’s Opening Minds Through the Arts Program.
