Nathaniel Hawthorne was a very well-known author in the mid-1800s. The manuscript that made him famous was the novel, “The Scarlet Letter.” Which was officially published in the year of 1850 along with two of his other very successful stories, “Young Goodman Brown.” And “The Minister’s Black Veil.” Hawthorne’s books became very popular in the year that it was published and has managed to remain extremely popular now, high school and college students are currently required to read his work today.

In Billy Budd, Herman Melville writes about a man named Billy Budd and his adventure aboard the Bellipotent. Within the many tales of Billy Budd, many deaths occurred, including Billy Budd himself. Through this death, Billy’s religious-like figure and his interactions with other characters expose Melville’s true intentions for the characters and the book. Innocence is always triumphed by knowledge.
Both disability and race are oppressing because of prejudices, ignorance, and the formation of societal norms. Ishmael notices he has “unwarrantable prejudices” based on race and that “ignorance is the parent of fear” (Moby-Dick 31, 34). Negative stereotypes about both African Americans and those with disabilities emerged, and societal norms were created surrounding both misunderstood ‘impairments.’ I am arguing that race and disability were each socially constructed and negative norms and regulations were established surrounding the two identities. Herman Melville’s background had a great impact in writing Moby Dick, specifically using events that happened in that period of time. Melville was born in New York City in 1819. Initially, his family was wealthy for some time until one year after Melville was born, they had to move to Albany trying to regain their fortune. Consequently, of so much work, his father, Allan Melville dies. When this occurs Melville needed to do a lot of changes in his life.

He lived a lavish lifestyle with several servants attending the house at one time, switching households every four years to a larger and better one. This was mostly due to Allan Melville’s, his father, work. He imported French dry goods, such as; clothing, thread, and other hardware in order to sell them for a percentage of the sales price. Due to this, Melville didn’t get to see his father often because he spent his time travelling to Europe for more goods.

Moby Dick by Herman Melville is about Ishmael and his journey on a whaling ship and an obsessive captain, captain Ahab, who only wants revenge on the whale that took his leg, Moby Dick. Roger Chillingworth and Captain Ahab are both evil characters with many similarities. Roger Chillingworth is obsessed with Arthur Dimmesdale, the father father of pearl. Chillingworth goes to Arthur Dimmesdale and tells him he can help him with his sickness.
The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a story about a woman, Hester Prynne, who committed adultery with the reverend, Arthur Dimmesdale, which will not confess his sin. A physician, Roger Chillingworth, takes care of him on the outside, but behind closed doors Chillingworth is keeping Dimmesdale in his pain. Because the man will not confess his sin he tortures himself, which causes physical and mental illnesses. Another American gothic novel, Moby Dick, was writing from the author's, Herman Melville , experience on a whaling ship. The wailing ship’s captain is Captain Ahab.
The Scarlett Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a novel about Hester committing adultery while married to Roger Chillingworth and shows how Roger goes crazy and tries to punish Arthur Dimmesdale for committing adultery with Hester. Moby Dick, written by Herman Melville, is about Captain Ahab obsessing over this white whale called Moby Dick who took Ahab’s leg off in the past and Ahab is putting the whole crew’s lives in danger going after this whale. Roger Chillingworth and Captain Ahab are both evil minded characters with many similarities. Roger Chillingworth is the way he is because of the things that have happened in his life over the past couple of years. Hester, which is his wife, commits adultery with Arthur Dimmesdale.
