The Odyssey Many people deem Odysseus to be an archetype hero. But was he really? Sure, he won many wars, but did he show the characteristics that matter? No!
When he returned home he found out that they took his cattle, slept with his maids, and just in general used his house. He was not very happy with them and wanted to get revenge for what they had done. Once again Odysseus shows his vengefulness when his crew gets turned into pigs. Odysseus sends his crewmates into the castle of Circe and Circe turns them into pigs. Odysseus finds this out and tries to kill her: “Circe gives Odysseus a magic drink, but it does not affect him and he threatens / to kill her with his sword” (10).
The first part of a long journey. The sirens can be described as loud,pretty,and unnatural. While the crewmen are relaxed and calm. Odysseus is trying to get untied,since he can hear the sirens beautiful song. The painting or image communicates the idea that they follow the ships trying to get them onto the island, while book twelve of "The Odyssey" communicates they stay on the island.
In part one of Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus uses his epic hero qualities to help him out on his quest to get back home to Ithaca. He’s shows superb intelligence when fighting the cyclopes in “Book 9.” That’s a quality of superhuman intelligence that Odysseus possessed all throughout his entire journey. Another epic hero quality that helped Odysseus was help from Greek gods and goddesses. In part two of Homer’s Odyssey, Athena helped out Odysseus when he got back to his home land.
In The Odyssey, Homer puts strong emphasis on the different roles of women through the characters. Homer uses mature women to show how strong women can still be weak, and he uses sexually active women to show the double standard between men and women. Women are portrayed to be nothing but housewife’s and used for sex, yet there is still emphasis that they need men around in order to be strong and kept together. Women are seen as nothing more than housewives and for sex and are seen as nothing more than an object.
Leadership is a difficult quality to obtain. There are many characteristics that person needs to have in order to be considered a leader. Most important characteristics to have while in charge are intelligence, common sense, cautiousness, and bravery. Two leaders that are well-known in history are Maria Theresa of Austria and Odysseus, the main character in Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. This epic poem has a main focus of leadership and it is a great piece of text to get the reader to ask questions and try to find out the characteristics that make a good leader.
Circe, a beautiful witch-goddess noted this vulnerability and took advantage of Odysseus's’ men when they visited her home. Circe, “ushered them in to sit on high backed chairs, then she mixed them a potion- cheese, barely and pale honey mulled in pramnian wine- but into the brew she stirred her wicked drugs” (Od. 10. 256-259). The eagerness of Odysseus’s peers depicts the susceptibility of men, when presented with food.
In the epic poem, “Odyssey” by Homer various important relationship traits are revealed. They all had a great impact on Odysseus life. Some are content and others were maligned. Three relationship traits that are significant in the story are the loyalty, disloyalty and accommodating. Once Odysseus returns back home, he finds out who his loyal and disloyal people are.
In The Odyssey an epic poem by Homer, Odysseus, a hero from Ithaca, is trapped on his way home from Athens and Troy. His son, Telemachus, goes on a journey looking for his lost father. Both son and father want to reclaim their house from the suitors who wish to marry Penelope, Odysseus’ wife. Genghis Khan, Choi Yuna, my brother, An Thai, and Odysseus have traits like strength, thoughtfulness, and attractiveness. People need heroes with these traits because they need role models and someone to guide them through life.
This just in Penelope announces that she will marry the suitor that can string Odysseus’s bow and shoot an arrow through twelve axe handles. Many suitors try but fail at the simple yet impossible task. Odysseus, disguised as a beggar, asks to give it a try but is denied quickly due to his appearance. Telemachus forces the suitors to give Odysseus a try. Odysseus easily strings the bow and shoots the arrow through the axe handles as expected.
Many people can agree that firefighters, policemen, and soldiers are heros. They all share similar redeeming qualities. Selflessness, bravery even when they’re scared out of their minds, and compassion. Saving people that they have never met, sticking to the moral code, and risking their lives for a greater cause. Whether it be saving one person, or saving hundreds.
Odysseus’s Traits Throughout the Odyssey, the main character Odysseus goes on an epic adventure with his focus being to get home to his wife Penelope, and his son Telemachus. He faces many obstacles dealing with characters such as the Cyclopes, Poseidon, Aeolus, Athena, Helios, Calypso, Zeus, Hermes, Scylla, and Circe. Odysseus’s men are some of the most valuable people to him throughout the Odyssey. He always puts himself in front of danger for them to protect them even though they all died from an unexpected turn of events soon before he returns home. When Odysseus comes home he greets his twenty year old son and straightens things out on his homeland, Ithaca.
A very noticeable difference that is found between the film The Odyssey and the poem written by Homer is the chronological scene order in which key events happen. In the film directed by Andrei Konchalovsky it begins with the birth of Telemachus, Odysseus and his wife Queen Penelope’s son where as in the poem it begins with Homer asking the bright eyed goddess of wisdom, Athena for her to tell him the tale of Odysseus. That is not the only appearance in which the chronological order varies, in the introduction of the poem, book I describes a meeting between the gods of Olympus as they discuss the fate of Odysseus as he is being held captive at Ogygia by the sea nymph Calypso, Athena being the main person in favour of his return home to Ithaca.
I love that Margaret Atwood chose to tell Penelope’s side of the story through Penelope’s point of view. It definitely makes the narrative of Odysseus and his journey much more interesting. However, the change in point of view causes the reader to question who is telling the true story – Homer or Penelope? Personally, I am having a hard time choosing what to believe and what not to believe; more specifically, I am conflicted over the character of Odysseus. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is portrayed as a hero whose only flaw is his pride.
The men, although brave, did not have a brain to match. I needed someone who could keep up with me and have intelligent conversations, someone worthy of being immortal like I. When Odysseus and his crew arrived on my island I thought that they would all be just like the others. Some men came to my palace and I offered them a feast and wine with honey. I hoped they would be clever enough to avoid my enchantment and be a worthy companion, but alas my hopes were extinguished. They quickly devoured the feast and drank my wine.
