3. How are the men in this story portrayed compared to the women?
I think that the men in this story were portrayed to be unreliable and the women were portrayed as hard working, reliable people. Throughout the story, Pa and Lizabeth’s husband Benny both leave the families and don’t come back. On the second page the author told us “One morning when they got up to go to work the cotton, Pa was not there.” He had left in the night without even saying goodbye to his kids. Then shortly after the family arrived in Chicago John died. Any male that is in this story eventually takes off or dies. Lizabeth’s husband Benny never comes back from going out south and little benny ends up being killed. Throughout the story two men die and two men just leave without saying goodbye. Find similarities between Lizabeth's environment at the start and end of the story.
The begging of the story Lizabeth is sitting on a bench at the Reformatory. At the ending of the story she is with the matron lady driving up from the city to the Reformatory. In both the start and end of the story the matron lady is with Lizabeth. She is nice to Lizabeth as the begging of the story when she is leaving she says “Good-bye, Lizabeth!” then “Be a good girl!” The matron lady is also nice to her at the end by nicely dropping her off at the Reformatory.
