The books Persepolis written by Marjane Satrapi and Night written by “Eliezer Wiesel” are both memoirs about their author's experiences during troubled times. In Persepolis, the protagonist, Marji, describes her life before, during, and after the Iranian Revolution. In Night, the leading figure, Elie, chronicles the time he spent in the German death camps during Sho’ah. While these two memoirs seem to be about two completely different topics, they contain similar themes, including faith and identity. In the graphic novel, Persepolis, “Marjane Satrapi” discusses the hard times that can be found in war. During the Iranian Revolution Marji, the main character, both Marji and Elie lose their faith from the hard times they face. In the graphic novel, Persepolis, Marji’s uncle is killed by the Iranian government. Marji loved her uncle, on page 74 Marji says, “That was my last meeting with my beloved Anoosh.” Marji’s loss of her uncle contributes to her renouncing of God. On the same page, Marji is sitting on her bed, mourning her uncle’s death when God comes and starts talking to her. Marji gets up and yells, “Shut up, You! Get out of my life! I never want to see you again! Get out!” Marji kicks God out of her life and loses her faith in her religion, Islam.
