Something that I learned from an early age was reality is a subjective matter, not objective. Our minds, our lens through which we color reality, distorts our perceptions so much that a single truth may not even exist. There are many writings on this phenomenon: Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” and “The Matrix” are just a few. But nothing has made me realize how subjective our thoughts and memories are like the Loftus and Palmer Study. In 1974, Psychologists Elizabeth Loftus and John Palmer proved how malleable memories with nothing more than a short video and simple questions. This study made me re-evaluate myself and others like nothing else I read. It made me realize that it wasn’t just our current views that could be altered, but our past
