Poetry Analysis - The Raven and Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe Edgar Allen Poe was an American poet who lived from 1809 to 1849. He died an untimely death, but wrote many great works in his short life. Two of these imaginative pieces, both poems, include Annabel Lee, published in 1849, and The Raven, published in 1845. These poems are very similar in many ways. Like most of Poe’s works, they focus on love and loss, and sanity versus madness.

He is best known for his use of dark, eerie, and emotionally haunted characters and elements of the supernatural in American Literature. Although, not much is mentioned from his biography, his subjective like qualities in his short stories captured the public’s attention. Poe’s reputation today rests primarily on his tales of terror as well as his nostalgic poetry. The meaning of the lives in his characters all portray an eerie subconscious of the narrator before he commits heinous crimes of premeditated murder.
Throughout history, we have came across many authors with different writing styles, word choice,or unique ways of interpretations. Edgar Allen Poe is one author who stands out to me the most. He has a unique and dark way of writing his stories and it appeals to the readers emotion and drama. He has a recurring theme of death and lost love, and in “The Tell-Tale Heart” Poe writes about murder, insanity, obsession and guilt. His use of symbolism and point of view is another reason what makes Poe one of the greatest.
Edgar Allan Poe was one of the first writers to express the idea of gothic literature. This poem, “The Raven,” has inspired many opinions as to what the bird symbolizes. As in all forms of literature, the words can mean many things to each unique, individual reader. In this story, a man remains identified as the narrator. It is late at night during December and it is revealed that he has recently lost his love, Lenore.

For most people who have had the privilege of reading the poem, would answer some questions about the poem stating that it is undoubtedly being the Poe us writing this poem with the unique propose to illustrate the strong impact left by the death of a loved one in the mind of the mourner. The answers that come by like these would be true because in the poem he really is going through a hard time after losing someone who has been by his side since he was a teenager. By Poe losing his wife made him start wanting to do things more than ever before because he wanted to do them for his wife not only for him. By telling the poem “The Raven “in first person point of view we learn that the narrator is alone Because we hear his thoughts as well as his spoken words we learn of the loss of his beloved, “For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore—“ the poem continues to chronicle the narrators search for the source of the noise. Without the first person point of view the narrators madness and anxiety would not be clear, Poe made it clear that the loss of a loved can create madness that can last forever. Edgar Allan Poe was a gothic literary writer who lived in the early 1800’s. Edgar was praised for writing unique and original stories and poems on disturbing topics like suffering and death. Examples of these stories and poems include “Eleonora” and “The Raven” which are both about a man lamenting over the loss of his wife. These two tales are very similar but show a rare insight into the mind of Poe and how much his life affected his melancholy writing.
Edgar Allan Poe had experienced a loss multiple times. Poe married his cousin when she was 13, he was 27. Both of Poe’s parents died in 1811 and so he was raised as a foster child. In the poem “Annabel Lee” he talks about how his love Annabel Lee passed away. In the poem “The Raven” he talks about his love, Lenore passing away and The Raven comes to him and is repetitive.
Though Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories like, The Cask of Amontillado, to his poems like, The Raven, Poe’s shows his writing style to use physical imagery and connotative syntax to show ,imagery in his writing. Throughout his life, Poe had always lived through the most chaotic and evil of time. His parents died while he was 3 years old. After his parents died, he lived with another family member who never accepted him as their own son. Later on in life, Poe had served in the military and at that point he started writing poems.
We have looked at two different sides of the poem, "Annabel Lee". We have heard the gloomy but soothing cry of the poem, by Edgar Allan Poe and the anger and tragic version by "Tiger Army". They both have similar words, but different meanings and effects from the audience. There are many differences of the two, but also a great amount of similarities. From the point of view of Poe and "Army" they both show emotions that they lose someone who they loved.

As a young boy he had many problems growing up Poe lost his mother when he was only sixteen and left to fend for himself. Throughout his life he was a hopeless romantic who got into a lot of relationships. One of the most known relationships that he got into was with Annabel Lee in which he had created as his last poem before his unexpected death, Annabel Lee. At the time he wasn’t only mourning the death of Annabel Lee but also the death of his wife a few years back which is the reason that he wrote The Raven.
