“Share our similarities, celebrate our differences”- M. Scott Peck. This quote greatly represents the notion of similarities and differences between multiple people. This stands as true in life, and in literature. In the book Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan is a historical fiction novel and the book Nobody Know by Hirokazu Kore-Eda which shows two people showing practices and values. In the book Homeless Bird the main character Koly marries at the age of 13 to a sick boy named Hari. She will eventually be dropped off at a place where she understands who she is and what she wants. In Nobody Knows the main character is named Akira and he is the oldest in his family. It is shown by Akira in two ways. Akira just wanted to be with his family. “But none of that mattered to Akira. It just felt good to be together” (Kore-Eda 17). This shows that Akira values family. Also, Because the mom wasn’t there, Akira got his siblings the envelopes with the money in them. “She didn’t come home for New Year’s Eve, either. She didn’t send the otoshidama… He found the special envelopes in the store… ‘Mom sent us all New Year’s presents!”’ (Kore-Eda 71-72). This is another way that Akira values family. In the book Homeless Bird Koly shares the same value of family with Akira. In the book, Koly brings her sick husband Hari to the Ganges river. “There were many people like Hari who were ill and going to the Ganges river to be cured” (Whelan 36). This demonstrated they value family. This practice is valued because if a loved one is very sick they bring he or she to the river to try to cure them. This was cool because it shows how much they loved Hari because they had to travel a distance to get to the river but in the end, Hari still
