It is my opinion that Romeo's punishment was just right as two people died as a result of the fight. At the beginning of the story, the Prince had warned them not to fight anymore. As stated in this quote, "If ever you disturb our streets again, Your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace.". Even though Romeo did not instigate the duel with Tybalt it was still a violation of the Prince's warning. Romeo should have stayed away and not come back as he was very angry about the death of his friend.
