Teenagers have always sought to be their own person, forgoing rules and even recommendations in favour of self-determination. While an honourable undertaking, this path to self-discovery, leads them to experience new ordeals, where mistakes will be made. To reassure us that these mistakes are not necessarily bad, Elizabeth Alexander, in her poem "Nineteen", illustrates how youth 's desire for freedom¬ and to escape from their reality allows them to grow into adulthood and leads them to make choices that will impact their perception of the world. This theme will be analysed through structure, symbolism and contrast.
The differences I see between these two poems can be found in the speakers. One is a first person speaker and the other is observing, but both are reflecting on the transformation from youth to adulthood. In “Quinceañera” by Judith Ortiz Cofer the speaker is growing up and becoming a woman. She must put away childhood and embrace womanhood. Take the first passage, “My dolls have been put away like dead / children in a chest I will carry / with me when I marry” (lines 1-3).
“On The Pulse of Morning” By: Maya Angelou and “One Day” By: Richard Blanco really explain the effects of cultural diversity among us Americans during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. For eample in some ways we are all the same. In the poem one day Richard Blanco stated these very true things such as, how we all wake up, go to work , go to school, and how each of us have our own prbolems no matter what background we came from or even social status. We can grow up living on dirt but with time we can grow into a successful citizen.
The appeal of adulthood and independence reaches its apex in fervent children. However, Maria Mazziotti Gillan, poet of My Daughter at 14, Christmas Dance, 1981, conveys the paternal perspective of viewing one’s own kin experiencing the “real” world through her daughter’s first relationship. The Family of Little Feet, written by Sarah Cisneros, illuminates the negativities of young girl’s eagerness to physically develop in hope of acquiring attention from possible suitors. While both pieces of literature possess varying perspectives of epiphanies, Gillan and Cisneros divulge the significance of cherishing one’s youth, as the realities of maturity divest children of their innocence.
Each stanza also makes the readers question their opinions and their understanding of the poem and the street. While analyzing Kenneth’s poem we see his use of imagery , personification, metaphorical language and repetition. With the end of each stanza repeating the words “you find this ugly, I find this lovely” the use of repetition gives the audience the sense of how the poet is displaying his message with this literary technique. The repetition also gives insight in how he see’s something that everyone calls ugly as something beautiful. The readers are also always drawn back to processing their opinions with his use
Have you ever been so mad that you did something stupid? Lizabeth in “Marigolds” acts out often. In the story “Marigolds” Lizabeth throws a tantrum and stomps on the marigolds. The theme of “Marigolds” is maturation leads to a deeper understanding of life. The theme of “marigolds” demonstrates Lizabeth’s change of attitude throughout the story just as maturation affects every modern teens.
You have to go through many obstacles to reach your goal. You also have to go through many challenges to accomplish the many different traditions you have. Many do sweet 16’s and that’s a tradition but there are much more, for example, a Quinceanera.
In the Freedom Writers Diary, the authors focus on the topic of the reality of what they have to deal with in their everyday world. Their teacher Mrs. Gruwell inspired them throughout their high school years by teaching them that it is possible for each and every one of them to change. They write with an uplifting and hopeful outlook on the world even if it not realistic in their present circumstances. In their writing, they establish an effective use of pathos by writing about their own lives and how they connect to others and us by using the selection of detail, metaphors, and allusions. Through these devices, we come to the idea that even though teenager’s in today’s world are faced with many hardships, they do not have to succumb to them.
Request to a year and Woman to child composed by Judith Wright, explores the intimate relationships that evolve around family, personal development, and childhood. Bruce Dawe’s Homecoming and Gwen Harwood’s Barn Owl both encapsulates the consequences and emotions that encompass the loss of innocence. Wright, Dawe and Harwood have used particular and concise textual features to express to the reader their individual ideas and relationships with their subjects and its symbolic links with their own life and personal experiences. Request to a year and Woman to child both analyse the intimate relationships that develop and progress around childhood, family and personal growth. Similar to Request to a year, Wright adapts a similar “story-telling”
Julia Alvarez, in her poem “’Poetry Makes Nothing Happen’?”, writes that poems do play a role in people’s lives. She supports her idea by using relateable examples of how poems might change someone’s life. Her first example is simple, poetry can entertain someone on long drives. This does not only aply to long dirves however, Alvarez uses this to show that poetry does not have to have a big influence on someone’s life, instead it can affect a person in the smallest of ways, such as entertainment. The second example describes poetry comforting someone after the loss of a loved one.
In a Hispanic tradition growing up, its every little girl 's dream to have a huge party when you turn 15 which in Mexico we call quinceanera. It 's a party where all your loved ones go, Friends and family. It 's all something you shouldn 't forget, from all the food, to our tradition, music, dances, planning , laughter, crying , pictures , presents, and much more stuff. Its all a dream come true that we all have a day that everyone dedicates that day to you and only you . First thing for my family and I was to plan this whole party a whole 6 months ahead, or others like to do a year ahead, because of course you need to save money for the party and you have almost all your imidate family helping you out with what ever you may need, they all cooperate with any little thing,
Firstly, the speaker is the one who is telling the poem
The poem Dusting by Julia Alverez relays several ideas to the reader. It begins by describing a young child going about a house and writing their name on the furniture. The child 's mother follows behind her and, in the process of dusting, incidentally erases the writing. While this poem may seem superficial from a quick reading, it not only reflects some aspects of Alverez’s childhood, but it also reveals some thought provoking questions. In Dusting, through making an analogy to a relationship between a mother and her child, Julia Alvarez demonstrates her desire to break away from traditional or cultural expectations, express her individuality, be well-known, and, ultimately, she makes an important point about life.
Carolyn Kizner’s pantoum “Parent Pantoum” (1996) laminates that the speaker is conflicted about her daughter’s adolescent behavior and attitude. Kizner explores the speakers discontent between herself and her children using metaphor, juxtaposition, and parallel structure. Through her contemporary pantoum, Kizners speaker marvels at her “enormous children” (1) in order to try to understand how the girls can “moan about their age” (6) but still appear in “fragile heals and long black dresses” (7). Kizners pantoum addresses the speakers view on how kids act when they are in their adolescent years with a bewildered tone, however; as the poem progresses, the speaker develops her own ideas about why teens behave the way they do in a hopeful and proud tone.
In a poem it is very good to use different types of figurative language in the poem. These ideas are clearly seen in the poem”Identity” by Julio Noboa Polanco, talks about how it is good to be unique ,and yourself. Even if people dislike you or treat you with disrespect. In “Identity”Polanco uses the literary devices of simile, alliteration, and repetition. The poem that Polanco wote is about being unique and yourself is a good thing.
