In this essay I'm going to analyse two examples of performance by using the three perspectives: body, space and time. The two examples I have chosen are 'Quizoola24' by Forced Entertainment and DV8’s 'The Cost of Living'.
Quizoola24
'Quizoola24' is a durational performance (an art form that makes you aware of the period of existence you are living in) where one person asks questions and another answers. This grasped my interest as I was curious what a 24 hour performance might be like. The questions I sought an answer to were: Did they (or the actors?) all stay on stage from start to finish (alternatively you could say: for the duration)? Did they have breaks? What impact such a non standard performance might have considering most performances last 2-3 hours?
There were six performers: Robin Arthur, Tim Etchells, Richard Lowdon, Claire Marshall, Cathy Naden and Terry O'Connor. The room was small with a wide range of changeable proxemics between both actors and the audience. Based on Edward T. Hall's study of proxemics the space between actor and actor moved from public space (3 metres+) to intimate (below 45cm). This was reciprocated by the audience as those who came to the performance together ranged from an intimate proximity to one that was personal casual (45cm to 120cm) while the rest of the audience kept their space of 3 metres and above. The actor and audience’s relationship didn't progress lower than social consultative (120cm to 3 metres). This created a calm spacial atmosphere enabling the audience to enjoy the performance yet still being close enough to feel a bond between yourself and the
