Lucas Stibbard played many roles, each having different character traits, movements and voices. Thom and Alethea were the two main characters but there were others along the way such as the alien, Thom and Alethea’s bosses, a magpie, One Eyed William, the Wall, Floor and Ceiling, all roles that were fulfilled and were portrayed to be believable. Each character relied on Stibbard’s ability to change voice and posture to suit each role, for example, One Eyed William was a Scottish Taxi driver/ priest who had lost his eye because of the Magpie so when Alethea is getting attacked by the “Demon Bird” he swoops in to save the day. To portray this role Stibbard acted out an elderly man, with one eye who had a Scottish accent. This contrasts too Thom’s Boss, who was a big, powerful, deep voiced man. As Stibbard uses minimal props, such as his piece of chalk, or an overhead projector, to help achieve the simplistic form of theatre which any actor can perform with. By using minimal set, costume and props it demonstrated that theatre can still exist. Theatre doesn’t need to be an elaborate setting, costume, props, or people. Stibbard stayed in the same outfit and on the same stage for the entirety of the performance. This minimal theatre technique made it simple for Stibbard to change from role to role and even though it was a solo man performance it was enjoyable. The audience was entertained the whole time as there was an Actor-Audience relationship maintained the whole time with direct and live interaction. Grotowski says that theatre “cannot exist without the actor-spectator relationship of perceptual, direct. ‘live’ communion.” And this is what the production of Boy Girl Wall has
