Do you enjoy reading? Do you automatically pick up a book in your free time? Is reading a fun activity for you? Sadly, most people in America find reading boring and a waste of time. Most adults after graduating college barely pick up a book again. They claim they don’t have the time and that books are just for kids. But, there is a solution to this problem! Thousands of authors in America have written marvelous works known as short stories. These stories are far from boring and even though they are shorter than most books they still have complex plots and storylines. Making them an interesting and short read at the same time! Still don’t believe me? Let me show you two examples of short stories and I’ll show you how different, interesting, and such a good read short stories are. Take the story, The Machine That Won The War for example. The story starts off telling us that a war has just been won and three scientists who have worked with a computer are tired. Both short stories are different in the main plots. But, if you look a little bit deeper you can find some similarities as well. Both authors make a point in each story. Though the points may be different from each other, the authors still take time to tell the readers their point of view on the subject. Another similarity would be the use of irony in both stories. Both authors apply the use of situational irony in both stories. For example, in The Machine That Won The War the name itself is ironic. The machine (computer) itself did not win the war but instead the scientists, the people, won the war. Likewise in The Story Of An Hour the woman is told her husband is dead and we take their word for it. But, in the end her husband is not dead, but alive.
