Dark elements in written literature have always been a huge part in literary time periods. “Alone” written by romantic author Edgar Allan Poe, is a poem written about him that explains the feeling of loneliness from his perspective. “Sinners of the Hands of an Angry God '' by Puritan writer Jonathan Edwards, shares his perspective on Christianity and God that most people today would argue to be an aggressive form of literature towards religion. In Jonathan Edwards short story “Sinners of the Hands of an Angry God” points out God's authority and power to believe every bad thing someone has will be held against one's will by God, making the word of God sound threatening towards modern day Christians. Jonathan goes into detail about his side of the dark elements of God by explaining, “Your wickedness makes you as it were heavy as lead, and to tend downwards with great weight and pressure towards hell; and if God should let you go, you would immediately sink and swiftly descend and plunge into the bottomless gulf” (Edwards). Even so, this citation demonstrates a similarity with “Alone” because it explains God being known as a dark, destructive and Angry being that isn’t forgiving. Making this similar when comparing to the main topic of dark or negative signs in different time periods. Compared to Poe’s story “Alone” showcases the point of view of someone that knows what it’s like to feel lonely in which paraphrases, “From the lightning in the sky / As it pass’d me flying by—” (Poe). The author is trying to emphasize that the evidence is similar to “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” because Poe is expressing his feelings that show negative emotions in his poem. Poe’s poem expresses feelings towards himself or someone else claiming, “From the sun that ‘round me roll’d / In its autumn tint of gold—-” (Poe). This quotation emphasizes that the poem is speaking negatively about oneself. The writer is an anguished character that feels constant loneliness that Poe put in dark literature. Furthermore, Edward's story only has talk about God and which manifest, “God is dreadfully provoked, his anger is as great towards them as to those that are actually suffering the executions of the fierceness of his wrath in hell” (Edwards).
