We all had time when, after finishing the movie, we thought of the possibilities of the movie character’s life in a modern day. When we feel sorry for the certain movie characters, we say to ourselves or people around us that things would be different if the same scenario happened in a today’s world. The film, “Blue Jasmine” (2013) by Woody Allen is a reference to the “A Streetcar Named Desire” (1951) by Tennessee Williams. The “Blue Jasmine” has so many similarities with everything on the “ A Streetcar Named Desire” but at the same time, holds so many differences including different setting and even holds different significant themes. The “Blue Jasmine” does not contain the same characters with the same characteristics to show that even some of their characteristics would be different if they were in a different time period such as the modern day.

Every story is different; however, they can share similar qualities. Stories can be powerful as the characters experience mirrors similar pathways to ourselves. For instance, obstacles or unknown events and how they find a way for it to resolve can look like our own. A great story contains many different elements. A Midsummer’s Night Dream and The Odyssey are two exciting stories that share similarities and differences.
My initial thought about privilege when I read the paper written by Peggy McIntosh was to instantaneously think about entitlement and the minimization of a cultural and a class of people. It’s not that whites are exclusive in the usage of systematic racial intolerance, it’s that they appear to be oblivious to the benefits of this entitlement. The author attempts to debase and use some forms of lightheartedness to point out the luxury she possessed as a result of simply being white but it’s much more than simply being white.
The characters I will be focusing on are Blanche and Stella. I will be working on the similarities and differences between Blanche and Stella. I will be using references from the story A Streetcar Named desire. Blanche Dubois in my opinion Is the main character of the play. Although Stella also plays A major role in the story.
In more ways than one the world of Disney has somewhat interacted in the world of Shakespeare. Hamlet and The Lion King ,all though years apart in the making, have been drafted to be almost similar with little to no differences. They are similar in the ways of the plot and the moral background, but different as far as the ending transition of Hamlet and Simba are combined. The plot of Hamlet and The Lion King alike are about an Uncle to the King, or a heir next in line to the throne trying to gain power. Thus including some of the main characters being the King, the Queen, the King and Queen’s son, the son’s first love, his first loves’ father, two of the son’s instigating friends, and of course the son’s one and only true friend.
A Streetcar Named Desire was produced and directed in 1951 by Elia Kazan. Based on the play written by Tennessee Williams, the film follows Blanche DuBois as she leaves her beloved hometown, Belle Reeve, and moves in with her sister, Stella Kowalski and husband, Stanley. Blanches flirtatious but traumatized personality causes problems for Stella and Stanley whose relationship is based off of sexual desires. Blanche is going through a battle in which she finds herself guilty for her late husbands suicide and this distress eventually leads to a huge conflict in the Kowalski household. Vivien Leigh played the dramatic Blanch DuBois and received an Oscar for the best female in a leading role.
The setting of the movie is the first obvious difference that can be seen. The movie was set in New York City, New York in 2000 while the play was set in Elsinore, Denmark in the late middle ages. This greatly affects the way the movie is viewed because it is essentially an entirely different world. In the movie there are video cameras, cars, phones and skyscrapers, all things that obviously weren’t around during Shakespeare’s time. Even if the movie and the play had been based in the same year, the story still would have been slightly different.
In 1951, Elia Kazan created a movie version of Tennessee Williams Street Car Named Desire. The play and movie both share the same characters and story. The plot was not changed except for the opening scene and the ending. The movie showed that Blanche took different street cars in the area surrounding where Stanley and Stella lived and the viewer could imagine how difficult it was for Blanche to adjust. There are only a few changes in dialogue for Blanche.
A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams highlights desire as a motivation with characters Blanche and Stanley. Desire is displayed through Blanche’s interaction with the young-newspaper boy and Stanley’s aggressiveness toward Blanche. However, the 1951 film directed by Elia Kazan is more effective in conveying desire through minor changes to the stagecraft, or the way a play is written and dramatics, a way in which a character acts. In the film A Streetcar Named Desire, the differences in the assault scene and Blanche’s interaction with the young newspaper boy emphasizes the theme that desire is a life-giving force.
Tennessee Williams wrote “A Streetcar Named Desire” (Williams, 1947) It is based in New Orleans a new cosmopolitan city which is poor but has raffish charm. The past is representing old south in America 1900’s and present is representing new America post world war 2 in 1940’s. Past and present are intertwined throughout the play in the characters Stanley, Blanche, Stella and mitch. Gender roles show that males are the dominant and rule the house which Stanley is prime example as he brings home food and we learn of one time when he got cross and he smashed the light bulbs.
Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” has been adapted to the very well-known Disney movie “The Lion King”. There are similarities and differences of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and Disney’s “The Lion King”. A very obvious difference is in “Hamlet” the characters are people and in “The Lion King” the characters are animals. A similarity is that in both Hamlet and Lion King the main character’s dad (the king) dies. While reading “A Street Car Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams, “Night” by Elie Wiesel and “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare, all have character similarities where each one had a goal in mind, accomplished that goal and experienced some difficulties along the way. The main characters of each story came from a family of wealth, prestige and tragedy. They all had to persevere to accomplish their goal regardless of the obstacles that were put in their way. Each story involved love, manipulation and a strong desire to seek revenge on people who have done them wrong.

After the new economic system based upon capital emerged succeeding the Industrial Revolution, the United States saw a massive prosperity in the early twentieth century only to be demolished by the stock market crash of 1929 also known as Black Tuesday (source). These unsuccessful stock markets were one of the signs that showed that the new system, which depended on an extensive labor force and an open and unregulated market, was not as reliable as previously thought, this period was known as the Depression.
