In Of Mice And Men, Steinbeck uses the disabilities of Crooks, George, and Curley's wife to show that the American Dream isn't always attainable. The American Dream is a fantasy and just a dream . The American Dream is a one and million thing. Especially in the time period of the Great Depression, the American Dream was just a thought and an idea. To begin, Crooks is unable to achieve his dreams because he is black. Crooks is unwanted in the the world because of the color of his skin. In the book, the boss of the ranch is one character who treats him unfairly and George is told when welcomed to the ranch that Crooks is a that he’s a “nigger stable buck” and that the “boss gives him hell” (Steinbeck 5). This shows how characters in the book treat blacks unfairly and that black people are given names and are given hell. Another event in the story that describes that Crooks is unable to do things in his life because he is black is when the ranch workers don't invite him to play cards. George is unable to reach the American Dream because of Lennie. Because of Lennie's disability, George has to slow down and move from place to place and job to job because of him. George rants to Lennie by the pond about what he can do without him by saying “God a’mighty if I was alone I could live so easy” (Steinbeck 12) This explains to the reader that Lennie is slowing George down and that if George was alone he could have an easy life. Secondly, George describes how if Lennie wasn’t around it would save him alot of trouble. While walking out of the bosses office George tell Lennie that it would “be a damn good thing” if he was kicked by a horse and that it would “save everybody a hell lot of trouble” (Steinbeck 24). This shows the reader how Lennie cause alot of trouble for George and that he makes George’s life harder than it already
